Update on the BME Mental Health Forum
Our final forum meeting for this year took place on the 17 November at Balham Library. The topics of discussion were Improving Access to Psychological Therapies, feedback on the 8th Black Mental Health conference (HOBV 8) and LGBT issues. There was some excellent news as South West London and St Georges NHS Mental Health Trust have managed to win the IAPT contract and are now planning a new service model. The new IAPT service will now be called Talk Wandsworth which is more simplified and easier to promote. We had some fantastic feedback regarding the 8th Black Mental Health conference as members thought it was the best thus far. We also had a candid and in-depth discussion on BME and LGBT issues which touched upon the shocking statistics of suicide and family rejection amongst young BME LGBT people. As this is such a taboo subject within the BME community it was suggested that we should run a workshop to explore these matters further. We are also likely to run a workshop in the coming weeks on the new Talk Wandsworth service, so look out for updates.
Future dates for the BME Mental Health Forum are to be confirmed
